The Long Island Pine Barrens TDR program is described in Beyond Takings and Givings. The book reported that, as of 2001, Pine Barren Credit (PBC) Certificates had been issued to a total of 335 parcels of land representing 315 acres of land under permanent conservation easement. By May 1, 2005, those statistics had increased. As of May 1, 2005, PBC Certificates had been issued to a total of 480 parcels of land representing 1,063 acres of land preserved. The total value of PBC transactions as of that date was estimated to be $15.3 million.

The Calverton Ponds form part of the core preservation area in the Long Islands Pine Barrens program.
